How to make wooden disposable ice cream spoons

Step 1: Cutting 17 inch long logs

In the first step, 17 inch long logs are cut from thick wood. In this process, one skilled worker and two helpers (unskilled workers) together cut them using a 3-phase electric chain saw machine.

Why only 17 inches?

The total length of the ply-strips that will be made from these logs in the peeling process and the total margin left on the right, left and middle are added to form a rough length of 17 inches.

For 95 mm spoon:

• 4 strips of 3.75 inches = 15 inches (3.75 inches = 95 mm)

• 0.75 inch margin on right end

• 0.5 inch margin on left end

• 0.25 inch margin 3 times, between every two strips = 0.75 inch

• Total 15 + 0.75 + 0.5 + 0.75 = 17 inches

Second step: Removing the outer rough bark of the boats manually

In the second step, the outer rough bark of the boats is removed. As per requirement 2 or 3 male helpers are engaged for this work. They remove the outer bark manually with the help of hand tools.

Why is the outer bark removed? Because of its roughness and hardness, its continuous long ply strips cannot be made, so it cannot be used anyway. The second reason is that if the outer bark is removed on the peeling machine, then the cutter blade of the machine will get damaged.

The boats with the outer bark removed are stacked in one place near the peeling machine for the next stage of processing.

Third stage: Making ply strips of the inner soft bark from the peeling machine

The machine that removes the inner soft, white, fine and long strip-like bark of the boats is known as the peeling machine and it looks like this.

In the third stage, the boats are loaded one after the other on the peeling machine where the spindle rotates the boat in a circular motion at a certain speed.

A cutter blade is brought in contact with the rotating boat. The contact is made slowly in the beginning, as the diameter of the sapling is irregular and uneven. When the initial irregular portion of the circumference is completely removed by the cutter, 4 continuous ply strips of the inner soft bark – each 95 mm wide – start coming out.
